October
Each month the Rollergirls like to highlight a player or players that do an outstanding job of playing the game and living the derby lifestyle, and each month we will bring you some little-known facts about the rollergirl(s) of the month through five questions with masterbates, NRG stats geek and web guy.
masterbates: How did you first get involved in Roller Derby?
Chinese Cheker: I had heard about derby from a friend. I've always been interested and finally got involved.
Hildabeast: Pretty randomly, actually. I'd never been a good skater and I'd never heard of roller derby, but I was supportive of my friend Emma who'd joined the team and came out to a rink with her for an open skate recruiting night back in July of 2006. As we were hanging out with a few of the girls later on that night, they convinced me that, after seeing me skate, I definitely had potential and was at about the skating level that some of them had been at when they started derby. I ordered skates online the next day and have been with the league ever since.
mb: Who has been your favorite rollergirl to compete with or against this season (or call a major penalty on as the case may be)?
Chinese Cheker: Against - Hildabeast. I'm always lined up against her and it's always a task avoiding her power hits
Hildabeast: For competing against, Chinese Cheker has been the new power blocker on the scene this year and I've enjoyed having her knock me around this season as well as the challenge of knocking her right back. She's a really strong blocker and I never go easy on her because I know she can take it. As far as playing with, I always enjoying blocking with Smith N. Wesson because she's amenable to me shoving her where I need her, usually at full force into the opposing jammer.
mb: What is your favorite thing about being a Damsel?
Chinese Cheker: Damsels are the way to go. The comraderie of the team is truly great.
mb: What is your favorite thing about being an X?
Hildabeast: I love our team colors and how we each have brought our own style to our uniforms. It's also really fun being the fresh team for this season.
mb: Who is you favorite Damsel of Distress/X Pistol and why?
Chinese Cheker: My favorite X Pistol is Britches. We are really good friends outside of derby and she always gives me a good challenge.
Hildabeast: Four Leaf Roller because she's fast and fierce. Additionally she and I started at the very same practice and jammed for the very first time together, so I've always felt a bond with her. She's got mad potential and I love to see her kick ass jamming and blocking.
mb: What does it take to be a killer blocker? Who is your favorite jammer to torture?
Chines Cheker: You have to be sturdy and solid on your feet and timing is key. I'd have to say Slammy and Britches.
Hildabeast: It takes timing, strength, high awareness of your surroundings, foresight, footwork, and never being scared of falling. I most enjoy torturing Molotov on the track because she's my derby rival and I also know she can handle it.
mb: What is the best hit you've ever made?
Chines Cheker: Hitting one of the tampa jammers into the boards 10 feet away.
Hildabeast: Derby is such an action packed sport that the hits I make usually come and go through my mind almost as quickly as they happen. There are two stand out hits I've made in my mind currently. One is the hit I gave Lady Fury in the August game that sent her flying into the 2nd row of chairs in the sponsorship section. That was a pretty memorable one. The other is from last season, during the Damsels/Rivals grudge match when I was still a Damsel. We were behind and I was a bit blood thirsty, so when I saw Meanie Pearl wasn't paying attention I side swiped her to the inside and completely knocked the beejesus out of her. I think it stands out in my memory because its a moment where I really did unleash the beast.

Killah B. Killed: One of my best friends, Mayhem N. Suze, was inspired to start skating again from the Rollergirls show on A&E. Her, Penaltease, and I went on a few visits to the skating rink, posted some online ads and we met Meanie Pearl. From there, the most dysfuctional family I've ever been in was born.
Meanie Pearl: Always loved it as a kid. Then heard about the girls out in Texas and knew I had to get involved. I saw Mayhem N. Suze's post on Craig's List and the rest was history.
mb: Who has been your favorite rollergirl to compete with or against this season (or call a major penalty on as the case may be)?
Killah B. Killed: Well, this season, my goal was to get back into competition mode, so I've mostly reffed. As a ref, I like calling penalties on people who whine about it, or argue every call.. As a player, I really, really, really loved playing with the B-team. They naturally work well as a team and they're really tough and tenacious. They're always positive but play hard too. They're just really awesome girls.
Meanie Pearl: I really liked skating against Hildabeast back when I was an Assault Rival. It makes me laugh at how quickly and easily she can knock me to the floor with no effort whatsoever and usually a smile on her face. But skating with The Underacheivers in Knoxville was the most fun, I love all my B Team girls!.
mb: You were injured while playing Memphis in the Honky Tonk Stomp last year. What has been the toughest part of your recovery and subsequent return to skating?
Killah B. Killed: It was physically difficult to get back to my old self, but I think what surprised me the most was how mentally and emotionally difficult it turned out to be. Starting from scratch again was pretty tough and watching your friends play, and kick ass was somewhat bittersweet at times. It was a great learning experience to step back from competing to be a coach, a ref, or sometimes just the annoying comic relief.
mb: How did you get injured? What has been the toughest part of your recovery and subsequent return to skating?
Meanie Pearl: My first day of derby bootcamp in Texas, used my shoulder to buffer my fall, learned that this was not a good idea. The hardest part was waiting to heal. Twice I tried to get back into things a little too soon. Was glad to have the opportunity to continue skating as a referee for a season and stay involved with the league. Now that I'm back as an active skater, my shoulder is about the only place I don't hurt!
mb: You are one of the founding members of NRG. What made you do it?
Killah B. Killed: Hmm...probably just the dream to one day be in an intimidating, rougue, pirate, skater gang.
mb: You've been with the league since the beginning right? What keeps you coming back for more?
Meanie Pearl: Must be some kind of death-wish I guess.
Every morning I wake up and my body tells me "No, please stop" but I just can't wait to lace up my skates.
mb: What has been your favorite derby outing? Y'know party, sponsor event, road trip, etc.
Killah B. Killed: Indy. It was our first bout, we lost the game, but we won the afterparty! That hotel would never leave unmanned wheelchairs by stairwells after that night, and I learned about critter faces. I think the Indy trip helped to set the attitude of NRG. No matter how crazy the game gets, (hopefully) we're smilling at the end, and taking over an entire floor of a hotel.
Meanie Pearl: Despite the pain, our trip to Texas was awesome! But I don't think I ever laughed as hard as I did with Killah in Tampa.

Lady Fury: I saw an episode of Rollergirls, the A&E show, and thought those girls were badass, so i researched NRG on the internet and found out a security guy I worked with met Mayhem N. Suze at a wedding. I went out to practice at Rocketown, and I've been hooked ever since.
E $$$: I always wanted to be a rollergirl and finally discovered that there was a team being started in Nashville from some flyers a friend picked up for me at the Tomato Festival. So I just walked in to practice October 3, 2006....... and have been hooked ever since.
mb: Who has been your favorite rollergirl to compete with or against this season?
Lady Fury: Maulin Monroe 'cause she's my derby wife. I love taking her out.
E $$$: Rambo Sambo..... She is the most challenging.
mb: What has been your favorite derby outing? Y'know party, sponsor event, road trip, etc.
Lady Fury: The Austin road trip a few of us went on was awesome. We got to practice with the girls from the Rollergirls A&E show on their banked track which is the original Bay City Bombers track. We also got to skate with the Big Easy Rollergirls in New Orleans.
E $$$: RollerCon 2007..... Without a doubt!!!
mb: Do you want to elaborate?
E $$$: Nope..... What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!!!
mb:
What's your favorite thing about being a Damsel?
Lady Fury:I've been with them from day one, so they are like my baby. The Damsels are the prettiest team in the league. Pink rocks!
mb: Why are you proud to be an X?
E $$$: Because it is the first intraleague team team that broke off from NRG's original two
teams....We are lean, green and mean........ not to mention, the X-Pistols is my own personal baby......Rarrrrr!!!!
mb: Who is you favorite X Pistol/Damsel of Distress and why?
Lady Fury: E $$$. she's got fire under her butt and in her belly. She means business, don't make her mad.
E $$$: Hmm..... I would say it's a toss-up between Chinese Cheker and Lady Fury. They have so much fire!!!
July
masterbates: How did you first get involved in Roller Derby?
Bootsy Brawlins: I started two years ago before there was even a real practice space. I hadn't been skating for about 15 years so my skills were lacking but I was hooked from the beginning.
Fully Addomatic: My first practice was August 8, 2006. I went to a practice with my roommate because she had started playing and it sounded violent and exciting.
mb: Who has been your favorite rollergirl to compete with or against this season?
Bootsy Brawlins: It truly depends on the day and who has pissed me off.
Fully Addomatic: I would have to say playing against Hildabeast for the challenge because she hits you like a Mack truck I would also have to say Four Leaf Roller because she is a great communicator and reliable on the track.
mb: What has been your favorite derby outing? Y'know party, sponsor event, road trip, etc.
Bootsy Brawlins: Definitely the after-party following our first bout last year against Naptown. It was a horrible bout, but the hotel will never be the same again.
Fully Addomatic: My favorite derby outing was when we played TCR in September of 2007 because it was my first out-of-town bout and a great learning experience. TCR used great communication and strategy and they rarely play dirty. It is always a great opportunity to have that kind of league to model after. And I should probably mention that the theme of that bout was The Homecoming M
assacar-ade and I was voted Homecoming Queen for Nashville.
mb: The Rivals are as of yet undefeated. What's your secret?
Bootsy Brawlins: I'm obviously not gonna give anything away, but it's no secret there is a lot of attitude comin' out of this team.
mb: The X Pistols are Nashville's newest derby team. Why are you proud to be an X?
Fully Addomatic: I love being an X because we have some of the fiercest blockers Hildabeast and E$$$, as well as the limber quick jammer Slammylou Harris. In addition, the skaters on X are really dedicated to hammering
out team needs.
mb: Who is you favorite X Pistol/Assault Rival and why?
Bootsy Brawlins: I love them all equally until we get out on the track, and then they're all gonna die.
Fully Addomatic: My favorite Assault Rival is Eurine A. Hole without a doubt. This skater came in green, green, green and she has worked her way up to being an incredible defensive and offensive blocker. She has a fire in her belly that is inspirational.
June
masterbates: How did you first get involved in Roller Derby?
Ivy Push Her: This will give away my age. I grew up with the L.A. Thunderbirds, my dad would take me to the Olympic Auditorium to see them. I also watched them every Saturday morning on t.v. When I moved to Nashville I was so excited to hear that there was derby here. I couldn't wait to see the Nashville Rollergirls play I never thought I would actually be one. Life is good.
Four Leaf Roller: Like most women who get involved with derby, I had not been on rollerskates for at least 10 years, but I never forgot how much I used to LOVE skating. When the t.v. show came out on A&E, my interest in skating was renewed. I had heard that Nashville had a league, so I looked them up on MySpace. They had an open skate posted on their calendar so I went, loved it, and then went to the very next practice. That was about two years ago, and I've been skating ever since.
mb: Who has been your favorite rollergirl to compete with or against this season?
Ivy Push Her: I love playing with everyone However, Ramb0's style challenges me the most.
Four Leaf Roller: I have loved scrimmaging against Macy Slay. When she hits you right, you know it. She is the only skater who has made my ribs feel like they are crunching together. And when she REALLY hits hard, she causes me to do awesome sommersaults all over the place.
mb: What has been your favorite derby outing? Y'know party, sponsor event, road trip, etc.
Ivy Push Her: I would have to say my favorite was driving down to Huntsville all together in one vehicle. It was such a great way to get up close and personal with each skater.
Four Leaf Roller: That would have to be the get together at Mayhem's house. I witnessed Mind Over Splatter's karaoke skills for the very first time, Olive was ravaged by a birthday cake, and someone sprained their ankle... and they weren't even on skates!
mb: Intra-league play is about to begin. What do you like most about Intra-league play?
Ivy Push Her: Gonna get to stall block Ramb0.
Four Leaf Roller: Playing against people that you know and also really like! It's a totally different game when you know the strengths and weaknesses of everyone on both teams. I think that this first Damsel/Rival bout is going to be one of the more challenging for me because of this reason.
mb: Who is you favorite Damsel of Distress/Assault Rival and why?
Ivy Push Her: I don't like pink!
Four Leaf Roller: What a horrible question. Choosing favorites is mean-spirited; I dislike them all equally.
mb: What do you like most about being a(n) Assault Rival/Damsel of Distress?
Ivy Push Her: Not having to wear pink.
Four Leaf Roller: Duh... I get to wear pink.

masterbates: How did you first get involved in Roller Derby?
Ramb0 Samb0: I was in a coffee shop in NC, no job and bored. As I had done every other time before, I grabbed the free local paper, got my coffee and sat down. Unbeknown to me I was about to find my calling. In the paper was an article onThe Rogue Rollergirls, Fayetteville, NC. I fell in love. I was at their next practice with all my gear and even
scrimmaged that day with them! (Which is pretty much unheard of in the derby world) The founder of RRG called me a natural and when I moved to TN I found the closest league and that's how I ended up at NRG.
mb: Who has been your favorite rollergirl to compete with or against this season?
Ramb0: It's hard for me to remember names. I would have to say quite a few jammers stick out, Goblyn from Knoxville is bad ass and Schnotty from the Tragic City Rollers. They are talented jammers and I had fun playing with them.
mb: What has been your favorite derby outing? Y'know party, sponsor event, road trip, etc.
Ramb0: Ahh s*@t....Memphis was decent, underwear
parties in Indiana was...umm...fun. White Trash New Years was freakin' insane... I think if there's more than 3 rollergirls somewhere it's a derby event! Sanctioned or not! White Trash New Year gets it!
mb: Besides Nashville, what is your favorite derby team?
Ramb0: Damn! Boston Derby Dames and Carolina Roller Girls. CRG because they were the first derby league I saw bout. Boston...'cause I love my New England WFTDA babes! I'm a Pissah...'nuf said!
mb: What are you reading, listening to, watching, or making right now?
Ramb0: Reading - Dial M for Monster by Steve Niles, and anything Eric Powell creates 'cause I get it fer free ; ). Idiots guide for not murdering people who piss you off wicked bad.
Watching - Just watched FIDO. I don't watch TV, but I love Simpsons and Adult Swim.
Listening to...mainly the new Human Flight Committee CD. Some White Stripes, Misfits, Rev. Horton Heat and Strypr...that's what's in my CD player...
Making - Clothes, cards....out mainly, Making out. I stick to what I'm best at. now F*@# off!!!
